Implementation of an Active Mass Damper to Control Vibrations in a “lively” Footbridge

چکیده
This paper describes the work involving a real implementation of an active control system to reduce vibrations in a “lively” footbridge located at FEUP. This structure has some natural frequencies around 2Hz which can be easily excited by some pedestrian activities. Although the levels of vibration may not be considered excessive according to some design codes, this footbridge experiments regularly unusual vibrations for this type of structure, which has motivated the implementation of a control system for research purposes. The active control developed is composed by an Active Mass Damper commanded by a controller based on the Velocity Feedback Control law. The efficiency of this control system is evaluated in terms of the reduction of the response when the structure is excited by several pedestrian loads.

Assessment of Semi-Active Tunes Mass Damper Application in Suppressing Seismic-Induced Vibration of an Existing Jacket Platform
In this study, mass, stiffness and damping matrices of the Nosrat jacket; located in Persian Gulf; equipped with Semi Active Tuned Mass Damper (SATMD) system have been derived after modeling the structure in SACS software. Owing to huge number of the degrees of freedom in the model, computation of on-line control of SATMD was time consuming. For this purpose, the size of the model was reduced i...
متن کاملUpgrading the Seismic Capacity of Pile-Supported Wharfs Using Semi-Active Liquid Column Gas Damper
One of the most important structures in the ports is the wharf. The most common one is the pile-supported wharf. This type of wharf is consisted of a number of piles and one deck which placed on the piles. In addition to the conventional loads that this structure should withstand, in seismic areas, pile-supported wharfs should have the necessary capacity and strength against seismic excitations...
متن کاملMR Damper Controlled Vibration Absorber for Enhanced Mitigation of Harmonic Vibrations
This paper describes a semi-active vibration absorber (SVA) concept based on a real-time controlled magnetorheological damper (MR-SVA) for the enhanced mitigation of structural vibrations due to harmonic disturbing forces. The force of the MR damper is controlled in real-time to generate the frequency and damping controls according to the behaviour of the undamped vibration absorber for the act...
متن کاملDynamic behaviour of composite mass damper for control of wind-excited vibration
The aim of this paper is to study the effectiveness of the passive, active and semiactive versions of the composite tuned mass damper systems to reduce vibrations of building structures exposed to strong winds. The LQR method is used to determine the active and semi-active control forces. Several remarks concerning the effectiveness of considering dampers are formulated on the basis of extensiv...
متن کاملDynamic Analysis of Suspension Footbridges Using an Actual Pedestrian Load Model Compared with EUR23984 EN Requirements
The suspension footbridges are very flexible due to their geometrical structure; hence they may face severe vibration problems induced mainly by natural forces and pedestrians crossing. By exceeding a certain limit, these vibrations can disturb the serviceability of the bridge as well as health and safety of the structure and pedestrians. Therefore, standard design guidelines are sets of recomm...
